Homemade Ice Cream In A Bag: A No-Churn Delight

Imagine making delicious, creamy vanilla ice cream from scratch without an ice cream maker, and in just 15 minutes! This “Ice Cream in a Bag” recipe is a fantastic way to introduce kids to the science of freezing and a perfect activity for a hot summer day. It’s a truly magical experience to watch liquids transform into a frozen treat right before your eyes, all within a simple plastic bag. This easy summer recipe promises a delightful dessert and an engaging learning opportunity.

Ingredients for One Serving:

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 sandwich-sized Ziploc bags
  • 1 gallon-sized Ziploc bag
  • 1/3 cup ice cream or rock salt (essential for lowering the ice’s freezing point!)
  • 3 cups or more of ice cubes

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Begin by combining the heavy cream, half-and-half, whole milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract into one of the sandwich-sized Ziploc bags. These ingredients will form your delicious ice cream base. Carefully remove as much air as possible from the bag before sealing it tightly. To ensure no leaks and maximum freezing efficiency, double-bag this mixture by placing the sealed sandwich bag inside another clean sandwich-sized Ziploc bag.
  2. Next, take your gallon-sized Ziploc bag. Fill it with the 3 cups (or more) of ice cubes and evenly sprinkle the 1/3 cup of rock salt over the ice. The rock salt is crucial here; it significantly lowers the melting point of the ice, creating an extra-cold brine that will freeze your ice cream mixture faster. Now, place the double-bagged cream mixture into this gallon bag. Seal the outer gallon bag, pressing out as much excess air as you can.
  3. Now comes the fun part! Shake the bag continuously for 10 to 15 minutes. Encourage kids to squish and massage the cream mixture inside the smaller bag as they shake. This constant motion helps the mixture freeze evenly and transforms it into creamy ice cream. You’ll notice the mixture getting thicker and colder as you go. It’s a great workout and a fantastic way to see the magic of science in action!
  4. Once your homemade ice cream has reached a firm, scoopable consistency, it’s ready! Carefully open both the gallon-sized outer bag and the inner sandwich bags. Be extremely cautious not to let any of the salty ice mixture fall into your freshly made ice cream, as this could ruin the flavor. Remove the ice cream bag, scoop the delightful treat into bowls, and invite everyone to customize it with their favorite toppings, such as sprinkles, chocolate syrup, or fresh berries. Enjoy immediately for the best experience!

Pro Tip: For different flavors, you can add a tablespoon of cocoa powder for chocolate ice cream, a few drops of food coloring, or even a teaspoon of flavored extract (like peppermint or almond) along with the vanilla.

kids making fresh lemonade

Farmers Market Fresh Lemonade: A Refreshing Summer Beverage

Nothing quite says summer like a tall glass of ice-cold, freshly squeezed lemonade. This recipe brings the vibrant taste of a farmers market right into your kitchen, offering a simple and incredibly affordable alternative to store-bought varieties. It’s a wonderful activity for teaching kids about fresh ingredients and the joy of a truly refreshing drink. Perfect for quenching thirst on a sizzling afternoon!

Ingredients for One Serving:

  • 1 fresh lemon, washed thoroughly and cut into small wedges
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
  • 1 cup ice
  • 16 ounces of cold water
  • 1 32-ounce plastic container with a secure lid (or a sturdy mason jar)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Place the lemon slices and granulated sugar into your plastic container. Using a muddler (or the back of a wooden spoon), vigorously muddle the lemon slices with the sugar. The goal here is to release all the flavorful juice and essential oils from the lemon rind while the sugar helps to extract and dissolve the lemon’s tartness. Continue muddling until you see a significant amount of lemon juice at the bottom of the container.
  2. Once the lemons are thoroughly muddled, top the mixture with the ice and then pour in the 16 ounces of cold water.
  3. Securely lock the lid onto the container. Shake the container vigorously for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the sugar is completely dissolved and all the ingredients are well incorporated. Give it a taste test and add more sugar if desired. Enjoy your homemade, perfectly refreshing lemonade immediately!

Creative Flavor Variations: Feel free to experiment and elevate your lemonade! Use the muddler to add other fresh fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or even a few sprigs of mint or basil for an herbal twist. You can also mix in a splash of your favorite flavored drink syrups (like grenadine or elderflower) or even a touch of cream for a “creamsicle” inspired lemonade. The possibilities are endless for creating your signature summer beverage!

kids making candy necklaces and kabobs

Creative Edible Crafts: DIY Candy Necklaces and Kabobs

Unleash your kids’ inner crafters and sweet tooth with these incredibly fun and deliciously edible DIY candy necklaces and kabobs! This activity is as simple as it sounds: gather some stretchy bracelet string and an assortment of candies with holes (or ones that can be easily skewered). It’s a fantastic way to encourage fine motor skills, pattern recognition, and imaginative play, culminating in a wearable or shareable treat!

For DIY Candy Necklaces:

Grab some stretchy elastic string (often used for bracelets) and an assortment of candies that already have a hole in the middle, or are soft enough to poke a hole through without crumbling. Threading these onto the string creates a colorful, edible accessory. Candies that work exceptionally well for necklaces include:

  • Peach Rings
  • Gummy Life Savers
  • Sour Punch Straw Bites (cut into smaller pieces if too long)
  • Fruit Loop Cereal (for a softer, less sugary option)
  • Gummy Bears (if you can carefully poke a hole with a small skewer or toothpick first)

Guide younger children in threading, and encourage them to create patterns with different colors or shapes. Tie the ends securely to form a necklace or bracelet. They’ll love wearing their delicious creations!

For DIY Candy Kabobs:

Candy kabobs offer even more versatility, as almost any soft candy can be used! You’ll need wooden skewers (blunt-tipped ones are safer for kids) for this activity. The beauty of kabobs is that you can easily skewer candies, creating a hole if they don’t already have one. This is a wonderfully darling activity that kids enjoy making and, of course, devouring!

Great candies for kabobs include:

  • Gummy Worms
  • Marshmallows (mini or regular)
  • Sour Gummy Candies (like Sour Patch Kids)
  • Fruit Chews (like Starburst or Laffy Taffy, softened slightly if needed)
  • Chocolate-covered pretzels (carefully skewer through the pretzel)
  • Large gummy candies (bears, sharks, etc.)

Tips for Success:

  • For younger children, you might pre-poke holes in some of the tougher candies with a small, sharp object (like a toothpick or a skewer end) to make it easier for them to thread.
  • Supervise kids when using skewers, especially if they are pointed. Consider using smaller, rounded skewers for safety.
  • Encourage creativity: challenge kids to make specific color patterns, theme their kabobs (e.g., “rainbow kabob”), or mix and match textures.
  • These edible crafts are perfect for birthday parties, playdates, or just a fun afternoon treat. They also make adorable party favors!
