The Fierce Utah vs BYU College Football Rivalry: A Tradition of Passion

Even if you’re not based in Utah, the legendary rivalry between BYU and the University of Utah is likely a story you’ve heard. Locally known as “The Holy War,” this annual college football showdown is far more than just a game; it’s a century-old tradition steeped in deep passion, pride, and sometimes, good-natured (or not-so-good-natured) contention. The proximity of the two universities, their differing religious affiliations, and the sheer longevity of their competition have forged one of the most intense and captivating rivalries in all of college sports.

I come from a truly divided house, which perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this rivalry. My parents are proud BYU alumni, having graduated from there and instilled a love for the Cougars in me from a young age. On the other side, my husband and his parents are staunch supporters of the U of U, embodying the unwavering “Go Utes!” spirit. Growing up, I naturally gravitated towards BYU fandom. However, life, as it often does, brought a change of allegiance. After getting married and moving to Salt Lake City, I enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Utah. It took some time and consideration, but I can now officially declare my loyalty: I am a proud University of Utah fan! Go UTES!! This personal journey highlights how deeply ingrained this rivalry is in the fabric of Utah life – it can even divide (and unite!) families and shape personal identities.

The Undecided Cupcake: A Sweet Truce for Divided Loyalty

In a rivalry as intense as Utah vs BYU, picking a side is practically mandatory. But what if your heart is truly divided, or you find yourself a neutral observer in a sea of passionate fans? Fear not, for I have concocted a special treat just for you: the double-fan cupcake! This unique creation beautifully marries both the vibrant red and the striking blue batter, swirled together in a delightful harmony that represents both teams.

My husband, ever the purist when it comes to the “Holy War,” affectionately (or perhaps not-so-affectionately) refers to this as the cupcake for “the worst kind of fan” – because in this rivalry, you’re *supposed* to choose! But with these delicious, visually stunning cupcakes, you don’t have to. You can have the best of both worlds, celebrating the spirit of the game without committing to a single side. They are perfect for households with split allegiances, or for anyone who simply appreciates a beautiful, multi-colored dessert. It’s a sweet truce in a fierce battle, offering a moment of delicious unity.

Crafting Your Team Spirit: How to Make White Chocolate Letters (and More!)

The beauty of these Utah vs BYU cupcakes lies not only in their deliciousness but also in their incredible ease and customization. When you’re making them at home, you have complete creative control. You can proudly support your chosen team by dyeing all your batter red or blue, or embrace the dual spirit with a swirling mix. The possibilities are truly endless, especially since we’re starting with a versatile white cake mix, which serves as the perfect canvas for vibrant food coloring.

For the frosting, I highly recommend a classic cream cheese frosting. Its rich, slightly tangy flavor beautifully complements the sweet cake, and it provides a sturdy, smooth base for decorating. Plus, there’s something wonderful about how its edges can crisp ever so slightly, adding another layer of texture.

Now, for the fun part that truly personalizes these college football cupcakes: the white chocolate team letters! This technique is surprisingly simple and adds a professional, celebratory touch. Here’s a quick guide:

  1. First, find or design the letters or logos you want to use for each cupcake (e.g., a simple “U” or “Y”). Print them out on a piece of paper.
  2. Place this printed design on a flat surface, like a baking sheet.
  3. Lay a piece of wax paper or parchment paper directly over the top of your printed design.
  4. Melt your white chocolate melting chips. You can do this in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each, until smooth. For an extra pop of team color, you can even mix in a tiny drop of food coloring into your melted white chocolate.
  5. Carefully trace the letters or designs with the melted white chocolate, using a piping bag with a small round tip or even a Ziploc bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
  6. Once traced, let your chocolate creations sit in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are completely set and firm.
  7. Gently peel them off the wax paper and place them atop your frosted cupcakes.

This super simple and easy method allows you to customize not just these rivalry cupcakes, but virtually anything you can imagine! It’s a fantastic way to add a personal touch to any celebration.

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • Red & Blue food coloring
  • Frosting:
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • Team Letters:
  • 2 cups white chocolate melting chips
  • Red & Blue food coloring (optional, for colored letters)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare cupcakes as directed on the package. If you are cheering for one team, dye your entire batter that specific team color (red or blue) and begin cooking. If you want to make both, divide the batter in half, dye one half red and the other half blue.
  3. Divide the batter into 24 cupcake tins, filling each about two-thirds full. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. When finished baking, let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. For the frosting, start by creaming together softened cream cheese and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and well combined.
  5. Next, beat in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  6. Finally, gradually add in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until it’s completely incorporated and the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  7. For the team letters, prepare a stencil by printing off the desired letters (like “U” or “Y”) from the internet. Place the paper in a cookie sheet and top with wax paper or parchment paper.
  8. Next, in a microwave-safe dish, melt down the white chocolate chips in 30-second increments, stirring well in between, until completely smooth. If desired, color the melted chocolate with a tiny drop of red or blue food coloring.
  9. Transfer the melted white chocolate to a piping bag with a small round tip, or use a plastic squeeze bottle. Carefully pipe the letters onto the wax paper, tracing your stencil.
  10. Let the tray set in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate letters to harden completely. Once set, gently peel them off the wax paper and place them on top of your frosted cupcakes.
