What to Pack for Your Maui Adventure

Packing for Maui is all about comfort, sun protection, and preparing for both relaxation and adventure. Here’s a curated list to ensure you have everything you need for an incredible trip:

  • Swimsuits: Absolutely essential! You’ll spend most of your time enjoying Maui’s stunning beaches, pools, and water activities.
  • Cover-Ups: Perfect for easily transitioning from the beach or pool to a casual lunch or stroll.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright Hawaiian sun. A good pair is non-negotiable.
  • Flip-Flops or Sandals: Your go-to footwear for almost every occasion, from beach days to casual dinners.
  • Tevas or Hiking Shoes: If you plan on exploring trails, waterfalls, or more rugged terrain like the Road to Hana or Haleakala, sturdy, comfortable shoes are a must.
  • Dresses or Nice Shirts: For evenings out at finer restaurants or enjoying a luau, having a few nicer outfit options is recommended.
  • Light Jacket or Sweater: While Maui is warm, evenings can be breezy, especially by the ocean or at higher elevations like Haleakala (where it can be quite cold at sunrise!).
  • Hat: Offers excellent sun protection for your face and scalp, whether you’re on the beach or hiking.
  • Sunscreen: Crucial for protecting your skin from intense UV rays. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen to help protect Maui’s delicate marine ecosystem.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated in the tropical heat and reduce plastic waste. Many resorts have water stations.
  • Camera or GoPro: You’ll want to capture the incredible beauty of Maui, from underwater adventures to panoramic vistas.
  • Exercise Clothes: If you enjoy morning runs, resort fitness centers, or active excursions, bring appropriate attire.
  • Neck Pillow for the Red-Eye Home: A small luxury that makes a big difference for overnight flights back, allowing for some much-needed rest.

What to Eat in Maui: A Culinary Journey

Maui boasts an incredible culinary scene, rich with fresh, local ingredients, especially seafood. Dining here is an experience in itself, with many restaurants offering breathtaking ocean views. My top recommendation is always to order the fresh fish—you truly can’t get it any fresher! Popular choices include mild white fish like mahi-mahi, Ahi (tuna), butterfish, and swordfish. Ask your server for the daily specials and popular menu items; they often have unique preparations that highlight the island’s flavors.

It’s worth noting that dining in Hawaii can be expensive. To balance this, we often prepare breakfast and some lunches in our condo. However, the restaurants listed below are, in my opinion, 100% worth the splurge for their quality, ambiance, and unforgettable flavors. Here are my absolute favorites, compiled from years of culinary exploration on Maui:

Delicious seafood dish with fresh fish and vibrant vegetables, a typical Hawaiian meal

Aloha Mixed Plate

This delightful spot offers an authentic taste of Hawaiian comfort food. With a great price point for families or groups, it’s perfect for a satisfying meal. The “Aloha Mixed Plate” dish, featuring a combination of local favorites, is a must-try and always hits the spot. Its prime location right on the water in Lahaina adds to the charm, making for a scenic dining experience with raving reviews.

Iconic Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant sign in Lahaina, Maui

Cheeseburger In Paradise

A true Hawaiian institution! This well-known burger joint is a fun, casual spot for families. We particularly loved the Lahaina location, which offered fantastic views right on the water. It’s a classic for a reason. *We dearly hope this beloved spot will rebuild and reopen after the devastating Lahaina Fire.*

Cool Cats Cafe

With its lively atmosphere and diverse menu, Cool Cats Cafe is a fantastic choice for families. Their wide variety of dishes ensures there’s something for everyone, and its location makes it ideal for a pre- or post-dinner stroll through Lahaina. *Our thoughts are with the community, and we hope for its eventual rebuilding after the Lahaina Fire.*

Coconut’s Fish Cafe

For some of the best fish tacos you’ll ever taste, Coconut’s Fish Cafe is an absolute must-visit. Their fresh, flavorful tacos are legendary and a personal favorite of mine. It’s a more casual setting, perfect for a quick and delicious meal.

Freshly prepared Acai bowl with colorful fruits and granola, a healthy breakfast or snack option in Maui

Choice Health Bar

Located conveniently at Whaler’s Village, Choice Health Bar is your go-to for incredibly delicious and healthy shakes and Acai bowls. Perfect for a refreshing breakfast or a light, energizing lunch after a morning on the beach.

Da Kitchen Cafe

A true local favorite, Da Kitchen Cafe is renowned for its hearty portions of traditional Hawaiian and local comfort food. While we unfortunately didn’t have time to wait during our last visit, the incredible aromas confirmed its popularity. It’s a place where you’ll find genuine local flavors.

Down the Hatch

This spot offers a lively and fun dining experience with a creative menu. We thoroughly enjoyed their breakfast offerings, especially the “cakes, flakes, and French toast tower” – a delightful indulgence! The dinner menu also looks promising with a great selection of seafood and American fare. *We hope this vibrant establishment can recover and thrive once more after the Lahaina Fire.*

Dukes

For a quintessential Hawaiian dining experience, Dukes is unparalleled. Famous for its classic fresh fish preparations, you absolutely must try the fish “Dukes Way.” And to complete your meal, don’t leave without indulging in their iconic Hula Pie – it’s a legendary dessert that’s worth every bite!

Pancakes topped with macadamia nuts and bananas at The Gazebo, a popular Maui breakfast spot

The Gazebo

Famous for its breakfast and lunch, The Gazebo is incredibly popular. Expect a wait, sometimes up to an hour, but the line moves quickly, and the service is efficient. The macadamia nut banana pancakes are a revelation – truly worth every minute of waiting! It’s a beloved spot for a reason, offering delicious food with lovely views.

Hula Grill

A fantastic choice for either lunch or dinner, Hula Grill offers both a casual beach grill and a more formal sit-down restaurant, both providing excellent experiences. Its convenient location, often within walking distance from many resorts in Kaanapali, makes it a frequent and welcome stop for us.

A refreshing shaved ice dessert with various fruit flavors and a creamy 'snowcap'

Island Cream Company

Prepare for a treat! Island Cream Company arguably serves the best ice cream in Maui, if not the world. Their homemade creations, a delightful cross between gelato and ice cream, are truly exceptional. My personal favorites are the rich caramel and the decadent turtle ice cream.

Kealani’s Juice Co

For a refreshing and healthy option, Kealani’s Juice Co offers delicious Acai bowls served right on the water. This small food truck, often found near the Marriott Hotel in Kaanapali, is perfect for a quick and flavorful pick-me-up.

Elegant interior of Kimo's restaurant in Lahaina, with ocean views

Kimo’s

Located in the heart of downtown Lahaina, Kimo’s has long been one of our go-to dinner spots. While they offer an excellent selection of fresh seafood—I particularly loved the mahi-mahi prepared “Kimo style”—they are also highly regarded for their prime rib. It’s a place that consistently delivers on taste and atmosphere. *Our hearts go out to the Lahaina community, and we hope to see Kimo’s rebuild and reopen in the future.*

Leilani’s On The Beach

Another iconic Hawaiian eatery, Leilani’s On The Beach, is a staple, especially for its famous fish tacos. Like Dukes, make sure to save room for their delicious Hula Pie! You can find this lively spot conveniently located at Whaler’s Village, offering beautiful beachside dining.

Mama’s Fish House

Mama’s Fish House is not just a restaurant; it’s an institution and a true highlight of Maui’s dining scene. Situated directly on the water, it offers spectacular views that perfectly complement its even better seafood. Be prepared for a higher price point, but the experience is truly exceptional. *Pro Tip: Reservations are essential and book up incredibly fast—make yours 8 weeks in advance via OpenTable or by calling the restaurant directly!*

Outdoor seating area at Merriman's restaurant with panoramic ocean views at sunset

Merriman’s

Merriman’s has quickly become one of our new absolute favorites on the island. With arguably the most gorgeous location in Kapalua, offering stunning cliffside views, it’s the perfect setting for a memorable meal. Their commitment to farm-to-table cuisine results in dishes that are as fresh as they are delicious. It’s a premium experience that is well worth the price tag.

MonkeyPod

Another strong contender for a favorite, MonkeyPod offers a delightful dining experience with several convenient locations across the island. Known for its lively atmosphere, creative cocktails (try the mai tai!), and locally sourced menu, it’s a consistently good choice for lunch or dinner.

Fresh fish tacos with vibrant toppings and lime wedges, a popular dish in Maui

Ohana Taco’s

Despite its humble beginnings in the Whaler’s Village food court, Ohana Taco’s was a beloved spot for us, especially for its delicious fish tacos. On one memorable trip, I enjoyed their fish tacos for lunch three times! *Note: As of a 2022 update, it’s no longer in the food court, but may have relocated elsewhere on the island. Keep an eye out for this gem!*

A plate of fresh seafood with rice and salad, a hearty meal from Paia Fish Market

Paia Fish Market Lahaina

This was hands-down one of our most favorite meals! The portions are incredibly generous, and the food is consistently fantastic. Offering fresh fish, burgers, pasta, salads, and more, everyone in our group of 12 loved their meal here. *While its Lahaina location was severely impacted by the fires, you can still enjoy their delicious food at their locations in Paia and Keihi!*

Papi Ohana

Prepare for the best cinnamon rolls on Maui! These giant, fun, and utterly delicious rolls are worth getting up early for. Expect a line, but it moves quickly. Papi Ohana also serves excellent pizza in the evenings, though by order only, so plan ahead!

Artisan pizza with fresh toppings served on an outdoor patio overlooking the ocean

Pi Artisan Pizza

This pizza place has become a regular and beloved stop for us. It offers easy, delicious artisan pizzas with a fantastic outdoor patio that provides great views of the water and stunning Maui sunsets. Perfect for a relaxed evening meal. *We sincerely hope this wonderful spot can be restored in Lahaina after the recent tragedy.*

The Plantation House

Regarded as one of the best breakfast spots on the island, The Plantation House delivers an exquisite dining experience. Be sure to start with the cinnamon pineapple appetizer dip—it’s incredibly good! They also serve excellent lunch and dinner, with their mac-crusted Mahi-mahi being a personal favorite of mine.

Roundtable Pizza

For a casual and convenient meal, Roundtable Pizza is an easy choice for take-out. Their Hawaiian flavor pizza is a crowd-pleaser and was loved by everyone in our group, perfect for a relaxed night in.

Decadent chocolate soufflé dessert, a signature dish at Roy's Ka'anapali

Roy’s Ka’anapali

Roy’s is a widely recognized restaurant chain throughout the Hawaiian islands, known for its Pacific Rim cuisine. While their main courses are always satisfying, a key tip for dining here is to order the Chocolate Soufflé at the beginning of your meal. This allows them ample time to bake it fresh, ensuring a warm, decadent dessert experience.

Star Noodle

A very popular stop for food enthusiasts, Star Noodle offers a vibrant Thai/Asian fusion menu. While my personal experience five years ago was not my favorite, I’ve heard countless raving reviews since then, indicating it’s a culinary hotspot that many adore. It’s definitely worth checking out for its unique flavors.

Ululani’s Shaved Ice

For the ultimate refreshing treat, Ululani’s Shaved Ice is simply the best in Maui. Their commitment to soft, finely shaved ice and an extensive array of natural flavors truly sets them apart. I highly recommend trying the POG (Passion Orange Guava) flavor with a “snowcap” (a creamy topping) for a truly divine experience.

Historically a bustling hub, Downtown Lahaina was once filled with charming shops, art galleries, and diverse restaurants, making it a wonderful place to spend an evening. Highlights included the famous Banyan Tree Park and unique treats at local stores. *The community is rebuilding after the devastating fires, and while many businesses were lost, the spirit of Lahaina endures. Our absolute favorite beach for boogie boarding! DT Fleming’s offers fantastic waves, stunning clear blue water, and easy access, making it perfect for both experienced boogie boarders and beginners alike. It’s a lively spot but still offers plenty of space to relax.

Golfing

Maui is a golfer’s paradise, boasting some of the most scenic and challenging courses in the world. With lush fairways and breathtaking ocean backdrops, researching and booking a tee time at one of the island’s incredible courses is highly recommended for golf enthusiasts.

Haleakala

The majestic dormant volcano, Haleakala, dominates Maui’s landscape. A visit to its summit offers incredible views, especially at sunrise (reservations often required) or sunset. While my father-in-law bravely biked up, a more leisurely and equally rewarding experience is to drive or enjoy a guided bike tour down after watching the sunrise. The views from the top on a clear day are truly unparalleled.

Scenic overlook of Honakua Bay, with lush cliffs and clear ocean waters

Honakua Bay

If the winds are calm, Honakua Bay is an excellent spot for snorkeling. While the parking lot is small and requires a short walk through a lush forest to reach the ocean, the reward is abundant marine life and crystal-clear waters, making the effort entirely worthwhile.

Ho’Okipa Beach

A must-visit for nature lovers and surf enthusiasts! Ho’Okipa Beach is famous for being a prime spot to watch giant sea turtles basking on the sand and impressive windsurfers catching waves. It’s a vibrant and active beach, offering great photo opportunities.

It’s an accessible and enriching experience, perfect for families with young children seeking a taste of Maui’s natural beauty and history.

Ironwoods Beach

We absolutely adore Ironwoods Beach! Tucked away within a residential area, it offers a serene and picturesque setting, often less crowded than other popular spots. Its quiet beauty makes it ideal for relaxing, taking stunning photographs, or simply enjoying the peaceful ocean sounds.

Kapalua Bay

This crescent-shaped beach on Maui’s northwest coast is a true gem. Known for its soft white sand, remarkably calm waters, and abundant marine life, Kapalua Bay is a fantastic spot for snorkeling. Makenna Beach (Big Beach)

Located on the Wailea side of the island, Makenna Beach, affectionately known as “Big Beach,” lives up to its name with expansive sands and impressive waves. It’s a fantastic spot for boogie boarding and for those who enjoy the thrill of larger ocean swells.

Mala Wharf

For an unparalleled snorkeling experience, head to Mala Wharf in Lahaina. We’ve seen dozens of sea turtles here, gracefully swimming in the clear waters. The swim out to the best snorkeling spots isn’t far, and you’ll find an abundance of turtles straight out from the boat ramp. It’s an incredible opportunity for marine encounters!

Molokini

Just off the coast of Maui lies Molokini, a partially submerged volcanic crater that offers some of the best snorkeling and diving conditions in the world. Numerous boat tours depart daily, taking you to this pristine marine sanctuary to explore its vibrant coral reefs and diverse fish species.

The powerful Nakalele Blowhole erupting water high into the air on Maui's coastline

Nakalele Blowhole

One of Maui’s most captivating natural wonders, the Nakalele Blowhole is a mesmerizing sight. As ocean waves crash into the lava tube formations, water forcefully erupts into the air, creating a spectacular display. It offers fantastic photo opportunities and a fun, relatively easy hike suitable for all ages. Just be sure to maintain a safe distance and never turn your back on the ocean.

People paddleboarding in the calm waters off Ka'anapali Beach, Maui

Paddle Board at Ka’anapali

Renting paddleboards at Ka’anapali Beach is an activity we enjoy almost every year. We’ve been incredibly lucky to spot numerous sea turtles swimming alongside us during our paddles. On one memorable trip, we even witnessed whales breaching from our boards—an truly awe-inspiring experience!

A sunset dinner cruise offers a magical evening on the water. On our last trip, we went on The Pride of Maui cruise and had an absolute blast! We enjoyed delicious food, watched a stunning sunset over the Pacific, were entertained by a fun show, and even spotted whales in the distance. It’s a fantastic way to combine dining with breathtaking views and marine life viewing.

If you’re looking for unique and entertaining nightlife, Warren & Annabelle’s Magic Show is a phenomenal choice. This intimate, adults-only (21+) comedy and magic show is incredibly engaging and filled with clean, clever humor. If you visit Maui between December and April, a whale-watching tour is an absolute must-do. During these months, around 10,000 humpback whales migrate to Hawaii’s warmer waters for breeding and calving. To get up close to these magnificent creatures, we highly recommend a 2-hour catamaran sail with Trilogy Sailing, departing from Ka’anapali. It’s an unforgettable experience.

Where To Stay in Maui: Finding Your Perfect Retreat

Maui offers a vast array of accommodation options, from luxurious resorts to charming vacation rentals and family-friendly condos. Choosing where to stay often depends on your travel style, budget, and desired atmosphere. The main resort areas are Ka’anapali (west Maui), known for its lively beaches and extensive amenities, and Wailea (south Maui), which offers a more upscale and serene experience. Historically, my family stayed at the Hololani, a cozy timeshare, but my more recent trips have been with my in-laws at the Hyatt. I’d love to hear your recommendations in the comments below if you have any!

A smaller, condo-style resort, The Hololani is an excellent option for families seeking a comfortable and spacious stay. Located on the Lahaina side, it provides convenient access to many attractions and a more laid-back atmosphere, ideal for a relaxed family vacation.

The impressive facade and entrance of the Hyatt Residence Club in Ka'anapali, Maui

Hyatt Residence Club

When traveling with my in-laws, our go-to is the Hyatt Residence Club on Ka’anapali, and I absolutely love it! This resort boasts a fantastic location on the Lahaina side of the island, approximately 40 minutes from the airport. It features incredible pools, expansive lawn areas, a well-equipped gym, and direct beach access with excellent snorkeling right offshore. Any hotel along the Ka’anapali beach stretch (such as the Marriott, Hyatt Hotel, or Sheraton) is a great choice due to its convenient proximity to diverse dining, downtown Lahaina (for future visits), and the shopping delights of Whaler’s Village.

Grand Wailea

Though I haven’t had the pleasure of staying here myself, my husband’s experience at the Grand Wailea was nothing short of incredible. This hotel is renowned for its sheer charm, luxurious amenities, and stunning location on the exclusive Wailea side of the island. It’s a top choice for those seeking a high-end, pampering resort experience.
